about the src

The Student Recovery Community is a collective of students seeking social support and connection while facing the challenges of recovery from drug dependence (including alcohol), other mental health struggles, trauma and associated stigmas.  The SRC provides a comforting and inclusive space for the estimated 6000 UBC students each year dealing with these issues, and provides a peer group/support network, to help them navigate the turbulent waters of personal change. We provide opportunities for group engagement in the form of recovery meetings, events and a space on campus that is stigma free. Anyone can drop in and share as much or as little as they choose, provided they respect the SRC guidelines. Although we do not endorse drug use, we do not condemn individuals for choosing their own path (provided they do not compromise the recovery of others) and accept a variety of approaches to recovery in a non-judgmental way. Likewise, the SRC welcomes a plurality of views on how recovery can be achieved and what it means. Together we hope that our efforts will have a positive impact on the lives of students battling with addiction and temper the stigma surrounding it. With this approach we hope to increase the number of students that seek help and stay sober, while minimizing exclusion and social isolation.

about the blog

Academics Anonymous is a student blog created by members of the SRC which hopes to engage with the experiences of students in recovery from addiction to drugs (including alcohol). The blog explores a variety of topics, from academic works to personal anecdotes, from the perspective of students who have lived experience of addiction. These may include but are certainly not limited to personal stories, ideological discussions, critiques of culture, urban myth-busting, and challenging representations of addiction in popular media. Each writer has their own unique page, about section, and a comment forum where you can ask questions or give opinions (please read community guidelines). This bold writing experiment is an attempt to change minds and create something special. We hope to bring you authentic and creative writings from another perspective that may intrigue or inspire you. Just pick an article and start reading!
